USP'S of photography exposed

This website is still being constructed although the most important parts are complete in letters 'A' to 'Q', and "U" onwards. A few other letters may have individual items complete or partially complete but 'A' to 'Q' possibly contain some of the most important aspects of photography. I'm writing this website myself via HTML5, so please be patient. Completion depends on many other things and may take a while. How it works: Please select a letter / link for further information

WANT TO MOVE UP A GEAR, MAKE YOURSELF A BETTER PHOTOGRAPHER, ACHIEVE MORE SUCCESS IN COMPETIONS, THIS SITE IS FOR YOU!

Welcome to PHOTOGRAPHYEXPOSED.UK, ALL content is FREE, a Website dedicated to most things on photography and learning and improving your photography. Im sure there will be something of use to you. If you find this FREE website useful, please make the time to SHARE/SEND it those you think could benefit from some of the information within - thank you.

After many years of photography, I reckon the secret to taking a good photograph is about having a good composition, a good location or subject matter, good lighting, and you must manage the tonal range of your negative or digital file. You must learn how to manipulate your images to better represent what the eye and brain see, rather than just accept what your camera or phone is capable of recording. There some other factors involved but that’s the best piece of advice I can give you.

A WORD OF WARNING. IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO WORK HARD AND TO READ, THIS SITE MAY NOT BE FOR YOU!

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

Photography, to achieve some success or just to compete is all about hard work, putting in the effort. Remember, many things I suggest are to be regarded as ideas only and can be tried in your favourite editing program.I also want you to think of taking a photograph a bit like baking a cake. The ingredients are F.A.C.E., the process is E.T.O.I.L.E., the presentation or 'icing on the cake' is the EDITING. What are F.A.C.E. and E.T.O.I.L.E.? They are acronyms or little reminders I've developed to help me take a better photograph and evaluate or judge a photograph. You can benefit from these easy to remember acronyms.

F.A.C.E. stands for Feel, Accentuate, Composition, then E for Expose the photo.

E.T.O.I.L.E. represents E for exposure, T for technique, O for originality, I for impact, L for lighting-location (subject)-longevity, E for emotion-effort.

Both these techniques are explained in more detail elsewhere on the website, just select 'E' for ETOILE , 'F' for FACE If you take photographs purely for enjoyment, that's fine, you possibly don't do any EDITING. If you compete at any level, show your photographs to the general public or other photographers, you want to display your work in the best way possible, to do this, you should EDIT your photographs, put 'the icing on the cake'. If you are into Photoshop / Lightroom or some other editing program, and you don't want to jump ship, stay with what you know - that's fine. Many of my suggestions should be viewed as concepts and can be used in 'photography in general' or used in the editing program of your choice, without much re-learning.

If you watch Dragons Den (UK) you may be wondering, WHAT, is my USP, in other words, my unique selling point? Well, for a start, I'm not selling anything, all of the information is provided FREE of charge. My USP's, and there are several, they are:

1. I prefer to spend as much time on Aperture Priority and Shutter Speed Priority as techniques to influence the appearance of your image, not simply as a means of controlling exposure.

2. When taking a photograph I use the word FACE (Feel, Amplify/accentuate the good bits, C is a reminder to apply as many strong points of composition as possible, E is to take or make the exposure, making sure the exposure is benefitial to the scene or object).

3. When taking an image or evaluating my results or those of others, I use the ETOILE (Exposure, Technique, Originality, Impact, Lighting-Location(subject)-Longevity, Emotion-Effort) method for simplicity and ease of remembering. It's up to you, perhaps using FACE is sufficient but ETOILE is more complete.

4. Learn the unique EB (Extreme Bracketing) system for producing photos with an extended dynamique range almost matching the human eye/brain combination which at the time of writing, exceeds that of your top of the range cameras. Make your images stand out from the rest. Ensure your work is memorable for the right reasons.

5. Photography tends to be made too complicated and technical. I prefer to keep things as simple as possible.

6. The photographs used tend to be real life examples that have been viewed by many camera clubs, won competitions or been used in editorials and magazines.

7. The "Top Tips" are my tips and are learned from experience in the field, not simply regurgitated from some book to look or sound good.

8. Smartphones or camera-phones are covered too, with real life examples. You don't need to launch any other site. As a user of camera phones, I can give practical advice too.

9. You, yes you, can influence what is covered on this site, so send off that email to "coolpics" A.S.A.P.

10. Learn many money saving tips, how you may never need to purchase certain filters, ever again.

11. Learn from someone who has used top-end pro-kit, and has had to learn to use smartphones as photographic devices because of a nasty stroke that left me paralysed down one side (a hemiplegic).

No, I'm not the best photographer in the world, not the worst, but what I do value is my range of experience. Having never truely specialized in any one genre of photography (maybe landscapes if I had to choose), unlike some togs (photographers), I have covered many subjects and hope to pass this knowledge on to you. I've covered weddings, shot portraits, covered many different sports, tried street photography, candids, formal, served as a freelancer working as a press tog for a local rag. I've photographed christenings, parties, been a member of 5 clubs and judged/talked at many clubs, photographed landscapes with success, and more.

I include TUITION and TIPS that are absolutely FREE, you won't be expected to sign up or join a website, you won't be given something for free, only to be offered something 'better' at a discounted price, or you are pressurised into buying within a certain time-frame (sound familiar?). Another technique is to give you a link to a boring webinar lasting nearly an hour so that you are brainwashed with hard selling techniques so that if you watch it and sit through the webinar, you will probably be offered something for nothing, knowledge that you can pick up here for free anyway.

Please digest what you find useful, ignore the rest. You don't have to buy or subscribe to anything, I simply ask that if you find the website of some benefit, share it/mention it to your friends that are keen on photography or learning photography. This website may save them some time.

Please remember, this is NOT an "A" to "Z" of photography, there are many web sites that are better at explaining all the different aspects of photography and in more detail than I as an individual could ever do. This website is more of an "A" to "Z" of "experiences" from one person who is fairly passionate about photography, with important "tips" highlighted and photographs backing up the various topics described along the way.

I'm not a company so the web address doesn't end in .co.uk which usually signifies a UK company. I'm not sponsored or receive any money from any company, opinions and tips are mine alone and updates may take longer to be applied, please be patient. Information is peppered with TOP TIPS in green text that impart little "goodies" that you may find beneficial to your photography, tips you are unlikely to find on other web sites. Yes, I pay for hosting this website and Ive paid for the domain name too and a secure SSL feature once the site is completed. I'm not out to make money, just offering to help others, give something back to the people, some of which helped me along the way. Ive never been a professional photographer, my job was in Information Technology. Please remember that.

WHAT MAKES THIS SITE DIFFERENT?

Apart from the USP's, many things - is the answer, but one important thing is that ALL the information is FREE and most of all, I give what I class as 'SOFT' tips, tips formed from years of practical photography. You can read and learn about 'HARD' tips or explanations on photography from the Internet or from many books, there are loads of website tutorials on just about all aspects of photography and with YOUTUBE as well, you can't go wrong! Also, you have the chance to influence what appears on this website. I'm not a nameless individual working for god knows who in a large, corporate organisation. I will make the effort to reply to you, it may take time, but all reasonable requests will be catered for.

ASK YOURSELF. What do you, as a photographer, really want?

You want to become a better photographer.
You want to take better photographs.
You want to take your photography up a level
You want to be able to assess your own work and that of others, effectively, using a proven system that is easily remembered and is easy to use.
You simply want to take a sharp, suitably exposed photograph, free of camera shake.
You want to learn about photography, and discover how to edit your photographs for free.

If you are in agreement with any of these statements, PHOTOGRAPHYEXPOSED.UK might be of some help to you.

IDEAL FOR BEGINNERS AND MORE EXPERIENCED PHOTOGRAPHERS ALIKE

Style, balance of the image and positioning of objects can be considered later as part of COMPOSITION, which is also covered in detail on this web site. Beginners or the more experienced, learn photography the easy way. The site, although benefitial to beginners, this site may also benefit those that have already grasped the basics and want to achieve more. Learn by a radical method of teaching where DOF and Shutter-Speed are taught as parts of composition & techniques to improve an image, not simply to adjust exposure. Learn using clear and simple methods, with practical photos explaining the more complex issues. Photography is not that old a subject but many teaching methods still preach old and outdated guidance, flavored by old techiques.

Why complicate things with teaching depth of field (DOF) control and motion blur early on in the learning process? There is no-one correct exposure anyway. With so many variables, no wonder. Think about it. Depth of Field or DOF controlled by the aperture you set, is that a technique to affect the appearance of your image or an exposure adjustment? Motion blur or freezing the action, is that a technique to affect the appearance of your image or an exposure adjustment? Remember, there is no such thing as one correct exposure, not without being fully aware of the photographers intent. Sure, the aperture and shutter-speed are part of the 'exposure triangle' and have an effect on exposure. In my opinion, aperture and shutter-speed offer two of the most influencial tools available to us and that's why they are covered in more detail under aperture priority and shutter-speed priority. Sometimes you have to look at things from a different perspective, look at things afresh, think out of the box. Photography has changed over the years, fortunately I've used film and handled the difficult change to digital. Many websites, books and most importantly the train of thought, are now a bit outdated, referring to issues that don't really concern us with the advancements in technology and the associated improvements in devices.

HTML5

Sorry users, this site is written in simple and basic HTML5 so smartphone display may not be the most suitable for use. I could have written a nicer looking website using one of the many free template driven web builders around but I couldn't quickly find a simple menu driven template that included more than 5 or 6 menu options. This site is designed for an android desktop type display, sorry.

So please try this site, give it a go, click a letter, you won't look back!

If I haven't explained something in sufficient detail and you can't find the answer on the Internet, feel free to email me at coolpics@outlook.com with your query. It may take a while for me to respond but I WILL get back to you.

I apologise in advance for any bad grammar and spelling mistakes, I never was very good at English, more of a science type guy! Any emails or data supplied, are kept confidential, not transmitted to anyone and the sender and data are kept confidential, so don't worry, email A.S.A.P. Did I mention my spelling and grammar could be improved, they are certainly much worse following my stroke in 2014.
