Buy the best OPTICS possible. The chances are you'll change your camera more often than your lenses that you might keep for a long time. Have confidence in your OPTICS. I tended to use "L" series glass or professional series lenses. They are much sharper at wide and small apertures. My most used lens was a 70-200 L IS USM F2.8 Lens, it was a cracker.
TOP TIP I bought zoom lenses for flexibility as they often saved a bit of effort when composing a shot. OK, the maximum aperture might have been slighlty larger but with a tripod and ISO adjustment, it was never a problem.
