I read "Cheaper to change a filter than have a lens repaired". Whenever I bought a new lens, I bought a UV or Skylight Filter and slapped it on the front of the lens. Seemed to make sense.
TOP TIP I once watched video, where somebody took a lens, no UV filter, purposely scratched the front of the lens, took a photograph with said lens. The photo turned out OK. The photo is made by using all of the glass or all of the front of the lenes, from the edges to the centre, so a scratch or dent may not affect your image. I wouldn't advocate scratching your lens, but why risk degrading our images taken with a lens costing a few hundred pounds by slapping on a cheap UV filter on the front? Buy a good filter from a well known manufacturer, peace of mind is difficult to value.
