FIELD OF VIEW

What is field of view? See it as the width or area seen by the eye when a particular lens is used. Kind of obvious really, a wide-angle lens has a far bigger field of view than does a telephoto lens which has quite a narrow field of view.

TOP TIP Scout around for different viewpoints, high and low. Do this before attaching your camer or phone to the tripod, that's why a quick release tripod head is an important necessity. Try different lenses too. That's why I favoured zoom lenses, I could change the field of view without having to change the lens, quite a time saver.

Field of view example
Taken with a smartphone using a fisheye attachment on a shiftcam device I bought for the smartphone. Its a handy case with a lens cover and 4 lenses that can be slid over the smartphone lenses.

Field of view example
Again, taken with a smartphone showing a limited depth of field with a reasonable field of view in evidence.

Taken at the Fringe
A narrow field of view and a shallow Depth Of Field offered with a telephoto setting on a 70-200 zoom lens. Photographed at the Fringe, Edinburgh. An excellant location for photographers.
