AGRICULTURAL SHOW, EXHIBITION & COMPETITION - GALASHIELS CAMERA CLUB

The 'AGRI' as it is often referred to, is quite possibly the premier exhibition and competiton in the Scottish Borders. Organised by Galashiels Camera Club, I have entered this competition three times and on my last entry (pre-stroke in 2013), I scooped a fair few awards, winning 4 firsts, four seconds, one third, 3 commended and a cup for the best mono entry. I won a shed load of money too which I believe they have since stopped awarding. Quite simply, although a stranger to this event in recent years, I know and understand what is involved.

The digital entries are displayed first, followed by copies of my prints on the bottom.

TOP TIP Always show your best work. You are restricted to the maximum sizes of digital images and print mounts, but ALWAYS produce your prints fairly large. Remember, a good 'big un' will always beat a good 'little un'. Make sure your entries are properly named and that your prints are nicely presented with good borders. Make sure there are no 'dog ears' or 'blemishes' on your prints.

TOP TIP Enter as many categories as possible to increase your chance of success. Even if you are not particularly fond of a certain category, enter it anyway. Take specific shots throughout the year with this competition in mind. Know your judge(s) and what they like - it helps.

TOP TIP Vary your mounting technique and appearance. Some judges may begin to recognise your work and in the 'interest of spreading it around', may be reluctant to keep awarding you prizes.

TOP TIP When selecting your work, use my ETOILE method. Award extra marks for IMPACT.

TOP TIP Remember, the judge(s) will have viewed many images. Make yours standout with the emphasis on ORIGINALITY and IMPACT

TOP TIP To be on the safe-side, mark the rear of your prints with an arrow and the words 'THIS WAY UP'. I once had an image of a Gannet in flight and the organisers of the exhibition (not the agri) mounted my print showing the bird on its back. This surely disadvantaged my entry.

TOP TIP Be prepared to EDIT your work. Others will have, so should you!
